Esteban Álvarez

Buenos Aires, 1966. he graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires (1992), and MA Fine Art from Middlesex University, London, UK (2000). He studied with Luis Camnitzer at his studio in Lucca, Italy (1994-5), and at Olomouc University, Czech Republic (1994). He participated in the residencies programme at Gasworks, London (2000). and Hwei-Lann International Artists Workshop in Taiwan (2003). Among other distintions, he obtained the 2nd Prize in the II Bienal de Grabado Latinoamericano y del caribe , Barranquilla, Colombia (1998), a study grant from The British Council (1999), and production grants from Fondo Nacional de las Artes (2002) , and Fundación Antorchas (2003). Among other exhibitions, lately participated in the biennial PR04, Puerto Rico and in A Parasite showing, Buenos Aires (2004); False Impressions, Colchester, UK and Ansia y Devoción, Fundación Proa, Buenos Aires (2003); Bienal de Arte Contemporânea das Américas, Fortaleza, Brasil, Contemporáneo 1, Malba, Buenos Aires, Unterwegs nach Timbuktu, Ifa Galerie, Berlín, Alemania, and Cité des Ondes, 5ª Manifestation Internationale video et art electronique, Montreal, Canadá (2002); Bienal Nacional de Arte de Bahía Blanca, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Bahía Blanca, Argentina (2001); Refried, Cubitt Gallery, London, UK (2000). He is a lecturer at several Institutions in Buenos Aires, where he curently lives and works.

International Artist in Residence Program. “El Basilisco” is an indepent non-profit space that exist to promote contemporary artitic creation through a process of incestigation, production and open confrontation.

Esteban will present “Projects for the Fin del Mundo Biennial”. The artist proposes a series of cuts and icefills to be carried out on the surface of the “Perito Moreno Glacier”, in order to achieve a more easily transitable surface, converting it into a plateau will fewer irregularities along the length and breadth of its 32 kilometers. This project aims to make access to the ice giant more democratic, in addition to maximizing its usage, with the construction of hockey and ice skating rinks, among other sports activities to be developed.
