Paulina Derbez

Paulina Derbez began studying violin at the age of 7, at Academia Yuriko Kuronuma, and continued at Ollin Yoliztli Music College in Mexico City. From 1993 to 1998, she completed her studies in Switzerland at Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana with Carlo Chiarappa, and in the Academia D'Archi Vivaldi with Susane Holm. She has won the FONCA scholarship (Mexico's National Fund for Culture and the Arts) three times. While in Switzerland, she developed the Whole Development Course consisting in a new musical pedagogy. For ten years, she has taught courses in violin based on this pedagogy, at festivals, schools and music academies, such as the Rudolf Steiner School in Lugano, Switzerland and the Yuriko Kuronuma Academy in Mexico City. As a professional violinist, she has performed in Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

Shika Shika - Performance. From afar I hear the movements of the eagle. I can perceive the flapping of wings as he prepares his flight towards the horizon and whispers in my ear, Shika, Shika. The creation of a concert in which the musician becomes a sonic character has been one of my artistic desires for many years. Why? Because in the moment that I step onto the stage as a character, specific emotions arise in me which in turn have a huge impact on the musical performance. It is as if my mind, emotions and body were fused into a single entity with violin and voice.

Performance at 1313 Gallery, Toronto, Canada; in the framework of aluCine Festival.
